As Florida’s economy crashes, DeSantis says he’s going ahead with $543 million in tax refunds for corporations

During a Health and Budget Disaster, Florida Lawmakers Continue Wasteful Corporate Tax Breaks

The governor and legislature constantly say that they don’t have the money to support public education and other state functions.  And FAU administrators  repeat this same line ad nauseam when it comes to faculty salaries and student support.   A major reason for the inadequate funds (beyond the current crisis) is that at the state level, Florida lawmakers have for decades been giving large corporations doing business in this state big tax breaks that lower an already criminally-low corporate income tax.  And there’s no convincing evidence that such corporate giveaways affect corporate decisions to leave or stay in Florida.  As with federal taxes, the big corporations aren’t paying their fair share any more.

There’s plenty of blame to share between state lawmakers and university managers, and this is one of the more visible areas where you can see the public, the faculty and students being robbed.  One of the strongest union voices in Tallahassee is Rich Templin, Research Director of the state AFL-CIO, quoted in this story, whose salary is partly paid with our union dues.
