Bargaining Update

September 13, 2011. Union contests administration’s refusal to bargain salaries

The union would like to bargain with the administration, but its representatives have been holding up negotiations due to disputed contract language. The administration claims that the deadline to open discussions concerning salaries has passed. But in the past salaries have always been open for negotiation during each contract year. Additionally, in email correspondences, the administration seemed to be in agreement that salaries would be bargained over the summer.

The union understands that salary negotiations are often contentious. Yet the right to collectively bargain over them, as well as other items, should be adhered to. We can have our disagreements during the bargaining process, but to
dismiss this process altogether is a violation of the C.B.A. and disrespectful of the faculty.

As of now, the union is currently grieving the refusal of the administration to bargain. Of course, we would like to come to an agreement outside of the grievance process and stop the grievance if the administration will meet us at the table.

We will keep you informed as to how this develops.
