Board of Governors of State University System approves new measures on planning, accountability |

TALLAHASSEE – The Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida today approved new regulations that call for better planning and accountability for Florida’s public universities.
The Board of Governors approved a regulation requiring each of the 11 institutions of the State University System to submit a work plan and an annual report, including detailed reporting on accountability metrics established by the board.
“These work plans will lay out, simply and clearly, the future goals of each institution and will explain how those goals meet the larger, statewide plan for the future,” said Sheila M. McDevitt, the chair of the Board of Governors. “This is not glamorous but it is vitally important to the State University System’s efficiency and effectiveness.”
Chancellor Frank T. Brogan said the work plans are a good example of the shared responsibility of the university boards of trustees and the Board of Governors. “Each board of trustees will develop a plan for the future that reflects that institution’s unique mission,” Brogan said. “The Board of Governors will ensure that all the plans for all the institutions fit together to make a larger, strategic plan that anticipates the needs of this state and its citizens.”
Brogan said the work plans will highlight each institution’s core strengths and demonstrate how those strengths work within the context of State University System goals.
The plans also include performance measures for each institution. “It is important that we use accountability measures to keep ourselves on track and to demonstrate that scarce resources are being put to the greatest use possible,” Brogan said.
The work plans and accountability measures are the result of efforts begun earlier this year by the Board of Governors’ Strategic Planning and Academic and System Oversight Committee. Working with each of the 11 public universities, the committee drafted the planning and accountability system approved today.
“I want to thank the committee members for their hard work, and also thank the university representatives, whose contributions were invaluable,” McDevitt said. “I believe we have a very strong system that will help the State University System forge a future of success.”
