Given the centrality of immigration in recent news and South Florida serving as a hub for various immigrant communities, we will be screening Boat People (2024), a short form fiction film about Haitian refugees who were held in Guantanamo Bay in the 1990s, and Black Girl (1966), the first Black independent Senegalese film that follows a Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy family. Al’lkens Plancher, the director of Boat People, and Renata Bozzetto, Deputy Director of the Florida Immigrant Rights Coalition, will join us in a post-screening discussion.
